With Canada experiencing more frequent and severe weather events, the federal government is launching a new scholarship program to support students pursuing careers in meteorology.
Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) has announced the Meteorology Awards Program, a $648,000 investment over four years that will provide approximately 80 scholarships to students studying atmospheric science.
“For more than 150 years, Canada has relied on skilled meteorologists to provide accurate and timely weather information,” said Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault. “This new scholarship will provide financial support so that young people can pursue careers in meteorology and climatology, helping Canada address the current and future impacts of climate change.”
The scholarships will be available to students enrolled in atmospheric science programs at six Canadian universities: Dalhousie University, Université du Québec à Montréal, McGill University, York University, the University of Manitoba, and the University of British Columbia.

Graduates of these programs will be eligible to apply for ECCC’s Meteorologist Occupational Training Program, which includes classroom instruction and prepares students for forecasting and research roles.
Universities Canada will administer the scholarships on behalf of ECCC. Preference will be given to applicants from equity-deserving groups, including Indigenous persons, members of visible minorities, persons with disabilities, and women.
Meteorologists play a critical role in monitoring and forecasting weather conditions, issuing severe weather alerts, and analyzing climate and environmental data. As climate change continues to drive demand for meteorological expertise, the federal government says it is committed to developing the next generation of professionals.
