SHREVEPORT, La. – A new federal tax credit program aims to boost financial support for private and charter school scholarships—particularly those serving lower-income families.
The measure, part of a sweeping new federal bill, allows taxpayers to claim a $1,700 credit for contributions made to schools that offer needs-based scholarships. The goal is to incentivize private giving to programs that help economically disadvantaged students access better educational opportunities.
“To qualify, the schools must offer scholarships to children from families earning no more than 300 percent of the median income in their community,” explained Hardy Foreman, a tax professional with Carr, Riggs & Ingram. “It’s uniquely designed for lower income individuals because the scholarship is need based.”
In Shreveport, that income cap would apply to households earning roughly $150,000 or less per year.
Each state must decide whether to opt in to the new federal program. Louisiana already offers an even more generous tax incentive for similar donations. Parents who contribute to qualifying scholarship programs in the state can receive a 95% state tax credit — with no limit on the contribution amount. Unlike the federal version, the Louisiana credit has no cap, making it a powerful tool for encouraging local giving.
