New Licking Heights scholarship honors late local leader Charles J. Rooks – The Newark Advocate
The legacy of a beloved community member will live on through a new scholarship established in his name.
The Charles J. Rooks “24” Memorial Scholarship Fund has been launched to honor the life and character of Licking Heights alumnus Charles J. Rooks, known to friends and family as Chuck. He was a Licking County native and former standout student-athlete who passed away unexpectedly.
Awarded annually, the scholarship will recognize one graduating senior from Licking Heights High School who exemplifies the leadership, compassion and generosity that defined Charles’ life. Recipients will be nominated by teachers and school faculty, based on the same values that Charles lived by: leadership on and off the court, kindness toward others and a commitment to community.
“Charles was the kind of person who made you feel seen, valued and supported,” said Kip Rooks, Charles’ brother and founder of the scholarship. “Whether it was through basketball, school or just being a good friend, he gave selflessly and lifted up everyone around him. We want his legacy to inspire future leaders to do the same.”
Charles was a star player on the basketball team and wore the number 24 proudly, reflected in the name of the scholarship. Beyond his athletic talent, though, he was known for his humility, kindness and willingness to help others in need.
The scholarship will be managed and presented annually by Kip’s nonprofit organization, Blessing Hands, as part of its ongoing mission to uplift and support youth in the community.
“Through this scholarship, we hope to keep Chuck’s memory alive and continue the impact he had on others,” Rooks added. “We believe that honoring students who carry forward his values is the best tribute we can give.”
“Initiatives like this are what Licking Heights is all about — partnerships between our families, schools and community to uplift the next generation of ethical leaders,” said Superintendent Kevin S. Miller. “We are extremely grateful for the generosity of proud, multigenerational Hornet families like the Rooks and deeply appreciate their service to our students and broader district community.”
