AMERICUS, Ga. (WALB) – If you are at all familiar with Georgia Southwestern University baseball. You’ve probably heard the saying ‘Do it for Devyn.’
Devyn Newberry was 27 years old when he was killed in a car crash. In 2019, he was on his way home from the places he loved the most, the baseball field.
Devyn was in his first year as head coach at Baconton Charter. Prior to that from 2011-2016 he was a member of the GSW baseball team.
Every year the Newberry family awards one scholarship to a cane in honor of ‘Do it for Devyn.’
Canes head coach Josh Mcdonald “I think it’s important to the family to just continue that legacy they have with Devyn and for our guys to experience that. Life’s not taking for granted at times and it could be your last game or could be your last opportunity so just honored to have that opportunity each year to have them come back and present that scholarship”
Freshman Carson Shaw was the 2025 recipient of the Devyn Newberry Dn9 scholarship. It’s the fifth year the Newberry family has been awarded the scholarship.
Devyn’s cousins Sadie, Lindsay, and Debra along with his mom Donna presented Carson Shaw with the scholarship.
Sadie also throughout the first pitch. For Shaw this is just the icing on the cake saying “Coming down here I didn’t have much to expect but it’s been fun, I appreciate coach [Josh Mcdonald] and all the other assistant coaches. I love it down here there’s nowhere else I’d rather be”
