Despite Newcastle’s senior class graduating back in May, those who can now call themselves alumni still manage to leave an impact on the school and their community.

The latest example of this is 2025 class salutatorian Benjamin Burk receiving a prestigious scholarship as he advances to the next stage of his academic career. Burk received the Mike A. Myers Foundation Scholarship.

“The Texas Interscholastic League Foundation (TILF) has awarded Benjamin Burk the Mike A. Myers Foundation Scholarship in the amount of $16,000,” the school said in a statement. “Benjamin qualified for the TILF scholarship program through his outstanding achievements in UIL State Academics.”

Burk and his fellow classmates competed in the University Interscholastic League (UIL) academic state meet Monday and Tuesday, May 19-20, in Austin.

Burk competed in public speaking, mathematics, calculator applications and numbers sense.

The alum played a key role in taking home championship gold for the third consecutive time for both the mathematics and calculator applications teams at Newcastle.

“I am extremely proud of the accomplishments Benjamin has received while at Newcastle ISD and am thankful his efforts have been recognized through the awarding of this academic scholarship,” Newcastle UIL academics coach Courtney Bozeman said. “Throughout his high school career, he earned six gold medals and one silver medal at the UIL State Academic competitions.”

Beyond just being impressive in competitions, Bozeman praised Burk’s abilities as a vocal leader to the rest of the team as well. Bozeman characterized Burk as “an integral part of the Newcastle mathematics team,” who has educated other teammates in strategies to implement at tournaments as well as pitfalls to avoid.

Bozeman said that a scholarship like the one Burk has received will help bridge the financial costs of college so that he can more directly focus on his studies and his goals.

On top of this, the connections that Burk has built with competitors and coaches will be invaluable for future professional opportunities.
