“Frida…A Self Portrait,” the next program in the Writers Theatre’s 2024-’25 season, opens on Jan. 23 in the Alexandra C. and John D. Nichols Theatre at 325 Tudor Court in Glencoe.
The show, which runs through Feb. 23, stars Vanessa Severo as both herself and legendary Mexican painter Frida Kahlo and is directed by Joanie Schultz.
Tickets begin at $35 and are on sale at Writers Theatre, 325 Tudor Court, Glencoe; (847) 242-6000; and online.
“Vanessa and Joanie have crafted an intimate theatrical experience that transcends the traditional stage biography, creating a rich tapestry that honors Kahlo’s complex legacy while simultaneously exploring the universal themes of identity, pain, and artistic expression,” Artistic Director Braden Abraham said in a press release.
“Frida” is on stage at 3 p.m. Feb. 5 and 19; 7:30 p.m. on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays between Jan. 23-Feb. 23; 3 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on Saturdays; and 2 p.m. on Sundays.
The remainder of the Writers Theatre season includes Brian Friel’s “Translations,” directed by Braden Abraham; and the world premiere of Madhuri Shekar’s “Dhaba on Devon Avenue,” directed by Chay Yew and produced in partnership with TimeLine Theatre Company.
Regina Dominican athletics earns national recognition
The National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association honored Regina Dominican High School, of Wilmette, for its “exemplary athletic program” through the Quality Program Assessment at the National Athletic Directors Conference in Austin, Texas, in December.
Regina Dominican is the first school from Illinois and the first all-girls school nationally to earn the QPA. In 2024, 25 schools earned this recognition and only 90 schools nationally have been recognized since the program’s inception in 2009.
To earn the honor, athletic departments must demonstrate excellence across 10 different categories.
“The QPA Award celebrates all of the great things that are done by our student body and coaches each and every day,” Regina Athletic Director Brian Mancuso said in a press release. “I am very proud of our coaches and our school community for all of the work that they put in each and every day to help our entire student population. My hope is that everyone involved takes pride in this accomplishment as well,”
A Regina press release says the school will hang a banner and plaque in its gymnasium to celebrate this accomplishment.
Wilmette student earns prestigious scholarship
Elisha Lee, a Wilmette eighth-grader, is one of 26 recipients of the Caroline D. Bradley Scholarship through the Institute for Educational Advancement, a national nonprofit.
The scholarship is a four-year high school award and according to a press release is one of the few merit-based, need-blind scholarships of its kind in the United States. In addition to the tuition funding, each scholar receives ongoing, personalized counseling and educational advocacy.
“Beyond the monetary support the Caroline D. Bradley Scholarship provides, it also means these bright young minds will become part of the IEA community as they continue on their educational journey,” said Deborah Monroe, president of the IEA. “We work closely with the students and their families to foster their lifelong love of learning and look forward to seeing how they develop their talents and share them with the world.”
The application for the next class of Caroline D. Bradley Scholars will be available in the fall.
