In celebration of National Scholarship Month, this November the University of Dubuque is sharing the stories of investors who are creating brighter futures and the stories of students who benefited.
Ricardo Cunningham, DBA, dean of graduate and adult studies at the University of Dubuque, remembers how his mother sacrificed financially to allow him to complete his degree as an undergraduate student. That act inspired him years later to help other students with the Ricardo Cunningham Scholarship.
“Establishing this scholarship is my way of contributing the same kindness my mother showed me by supporting students as they face the challenges of balancing academic goals with financial responsibilities,” Ricardo said. “Education has the power to change lives, and helping students overcome financial barriers is essential to ensuring they can fully benefit from their time at UD.”
The Ricardo Cunningham Scholarship supports students with financial need and reflects UD’s mission to build relationships that encourage intellectual, spiritual, and moral development and brighter futures.
“I encourage students to remember they can achieve great things, even when faced with challenges,” Ricardo said. “This financial support is a reminder that they are not alone and that their goals matter to me and the entire UD community … In my 19 years at UD, I’ve seen firsthand how a single scholarship can alleviate stress, spark hope, and unlock opportunities. I’m proud to contribute to an initiative that prioritize students’ success and fosters a culture of support and achievement.”
Madison Young, a sophomore pre-nursing major from Winslow, Illinois, is one of two students who received the scholarship this academic year.
“When I first learned I was a recipient of this year’s Ricardo Cunningham Scholarship, I was filled with the feelings of immense gratitude and appreciation,” she said. “Being able to receive such a prestigious scholarship is a great honor, and I am very thankful for those that decided I was fit for the award.”
Madison is a dedicated student, member of the University of Dubuque Student Nursing Association, and involved in intramural sports on campus. She is grateful to those who have helped her.
“The Ricardo Cunningham Scholarship has helped relieve financial stress that college gives many students, which overall helps eliminate the amplified stress from schoolwork,” she said. “Additionally, it motivated me to work harder in my studies.”
Ricardo hopes those who receive his scholarship will one day support others in turn. For now, his advice to those considering starting a scholarship is to think about the ripple effects their support can create for the students, for their families, and for their communities.
“Starting a scholarship is an incredible way to contribute to the future of education and make a lasting impact on the lives of individuals,” he said. “It’s more than financial aid; it’s an investment in talent and the ambitions of students who will go on to make meaningful contributions to the world.”
