The sound of a rolling bowling ball hitting 10 pins is music to Dusty Young, executive director of the New Mexico Activities Association.
This is no ordinary day at the bowling alley.
“It’s really about giving every dollar we receive to the kids in New Mexico,” Young said.
The NMAA gives out 70 scholarships of $1,000 every year to graduating high school seniors who participate in athletics and activities while also “succeeding in the classroom and the community,” Young said. The NMAA also raises $20,000 a year for grants to help schools start new programs, he said.
“That’s why we’re here,” Young said. “It’s all businesses and corporations, that want to support kids. It’s a lot of repeat bowlers here. They come year in and year out.”
This annual event has been held for the past 17 years on the Sunday before the Super Bowl, and Young said you can mark your calendar for next year’s Bowl-A-Thon.
