A local scholarship meant for non-traditional students is accepting applications through April 15.
The Vicki Frank Stec Non-traditional Student Award is for someone who’s been out of school for a while but is looking to either return to school, change careers or extend their education with an additional degree.
The amount is for $5,000, renewable with evidence of scholastic progress (i.e. minimum 3.0 GPA). It is good for a two- or four-year accredited institution, vocational school, community college or certificate program. The award is valid for full- or part-time attendance.
And Stec herself, who is a member of the review committee along with some of her 1973 Corry Area High School classmates, said that $5,000 doesn’t all have to go to one person, but can also be divided among two or three candidates.
The scholarship program was launched last year, but there were no qualified applicants, Stec explained.
The scholarship is funded by the Anthony Family Charitable Trust, along with four other, more traditional awards given to high school seniors.
Application forms are available at the Corry Higher Education Council, 221 N. Center St., and at the high school guidance office, 534 E. Pleasant St. The application requires completing the provided form and submitting a high school transcript and those from any courses taken since, letter of recommendation and narrative describing the applicant’s aspirations for higher education and the future.
Stec, who was valedictorian of her class at Corry, didn’t have the resources to attend college right out of high school. However, six years after graduation, she had the opportunity to earn her associate’s degree from Pitt-Titusville. Then, she went back to school again in 2006 and earned a bachelor’s degree from Gannon. It was another 10 years before she got her master’s degree online from Carlo University. During this time, she studied a wide variety of subjects, ranging from business administration to forensics. She was also raising a family.
To honor her achievements, Stec’s classmate Mike Anthony named the award after her when he established it last year as part of a plan to distribute nearly $1 million to Corry graduates across the span of 10 years.
