EAST PALESTINE — Norfolk Southern CEO Alan Shaw announced the 2024 Bulldog Legacy Scholarship winners Friday at the senior scholarship ceremonies held Friday at East Palestine High School.
The scholarship was established last year with a personal contribution of $445,000 from Shaw. The donation created an endowment to provide scholarships for students indefinitely and is designed to generate income to support the scholarships year after year. The winners received $1,000 and will be awarded up to $4,00o through their secondary-education careers, as long as academic performances are maintained.
This year’s winners are Mackenzie Parker, Jasmine Ludt, Joshua Bland and Leila Martin. All four are continuing their education in the state of Ohio. Parker will attend Kent State University at Salem and plans to study nursing, Ludt will attend Baldwin Wallace University and plans to major in exercise science, Bland will attend Youngstown State University and plans to study civil and construction engineering technology while Leila Martin will attend the University of Akron and plans to study pre-law.
The scholarship is part of what Shaw calls his investment in the future of East Palestine as the village continues to walk the road to recovery following last year’s train derailment.
“The selected students from East Palestine High School’s (EPHS) 2024 graduating class were chosen because of their academic achievements, leadership qualities, and their commitment to making a positive impact in the community,” Norfolk Southern said via a press release.
To be eligible for the Bulldog Legacy award, students must submit an application and must be a high school senior attending East Palestine High School, plan to enroll in full-time undergraduate study at an accredited two- or four-year college, university, vocational-technical school or military academy for the entire upcoming academic year and hold a minimum grade point average of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale (or its equivalent). Scholarship recipients are selected by Scholarship America on the basis of academic record, demonstrated leadership and participation in school and community activities, community service/volunteer experience, work experience, a statement of educational and career goals and objectives and unusual personal or family circumstances. Financial need is not considered.
Selection of recipients is made by Scholarship America. No officer or employee of Norfolk Southern plays a part in the selection.
In addition to the scholarship money, recipients also receive a North Face backpack and MacBook Air.
