Peyton Ward (right) receives the Career/Technology award from Mike Amsler
FRILLS CORNERS Now in its seventh year of awarding scholarships, the North Clarion Alumni Association with the support of the North Clarion Foundation and the Class of 1975 presented three $1,000 Scholarship awards to North Clarion seniors at the awards day in May.
These   awards are for the top academic student or Valedictorian and the top student in the technical trade program. This year there were two Valedictorians, Allison Ochs, and Tytus Troup. Normally this $1,000 award would be split between the winners, however, two alumni from the class of 1968 and 1971 stepped up and matched the amount with a special Valedictorian award. Both Valedictorians received $1,000. The $1,000 top/career technical student award went to Peyton Ward. As has been the tradition for the past seven years, two members of the class graduating 50 years ago presented the awards. This year Kim Pfaff and Mike Amsler from the Class of 1975 were given  that honor. To be eligible for the award the   winners must attend a college,   university, technical or trade school in the summer or fall this year. Allison Ochs   plans to attend Duquesne University in the fall pursuing a Doctorate in Pharmacy  Tytus Troup  will attend Penn State University and will major in Meteorology and Atmospheric Science. Peyton Ward will enroll at Geneva College majoring in Biomedical Science.
Scholarship background
The scholarship idea was initiated in 2018 by  North Clarion Class of 1971 graduate, Dan Gordon, who had a desire to provide a scholarship for the Valedictorian of the Class of 2021. With suggestions from many community members, his initial idea grew into two awards, one for the Valedictorian and a second for the top student attending a technical trade or community college. The North Clarion Foundation was engaged to receive donations and manage the distribution of award funds.
Since 2019, the alumni classes reaching their 50-year anniversary of graduation were challenged to raise funds to support one or two awards for the next year’s graduating class. Representatives from that class also presented the awards. Any additional funds these classes raised were applied to the general North Clarion Alumni scholarship fund for future awards. The classes from 1969 through 1974 enthusiastically responded raising over $20,000. Fifteen  $1,000 awards have now been presented. This year’s Class of 1975 raised an additional $1,800 toward the awards. The North Clarion Foundation Alumni Scholarship fund has now grown to over $25,000 and will continue to provide at least two scholarships to qualifying members of each graduating class for several years to come. Offering scholarships to both the Valedictorian(s) and top career technical student is a unique proposition in the county and the state. No other high school alumni group sponsors these awards. The North Clarion alumni are proud of their efforts and the ability to award these scholarships again.
Efforts going forward
Fund raising for the scholarship continues throughout the year. The primary method for fund raising has been to send out donation letters to alumni. Each year donation letters are sent to alumni from two classes and the class reaching their 50-year anniversary. Next year will be the Class of 1976 will be challenged to continue this tradition. Funding is open to any individual or business and is not limited to North Clarion alumni. Donations can be mailed to North Clarion Foundation Alumni Scholarship at 10439 Route 36, Tionesta, PA 16353.
If you would like to find out more about the scholarship and how to donate, information   can be found, on the home page of the North Clarion High School  web site www.northclarion.org  at the North Clarion Alumni Facebook site or by contacting northclarionscholarship@gmail.com
