A North Idaho College student was awarded a $5,000 scholarship from the Department of Idaho Military Order of the Purple Heart.
NIC announced Wednesday that Jayden Murphy, an NIC student studying to become a teacher, received the scholarship through her father, Sgt. Daniel Porter, a combat veteran who served in Iraq and was awarded a Purple Heart.
The Military Order of the Purple Heart Scholarship was created this year to support U.S. military veterans, especially Purple Heart recipients and their families, in their pursuit of education and training. Purple Hearts are awarded to service members who are wounded, killed or injured by enemy or friendly fire while serving their country.
Murphy is eligible to receive an additional $5,000 if she maintains strong academic performance.
“I am deeply honored and filled with gratitude to receive this scholarship,” Murphy said in the news release. “My father’s story and sacrifice inspire me every day to continue to work hard, and thanks to this scholarship, I can do just that while pursuing my education at NIC.”
NIC was designated a Purple Heart College in 2023, recognizing the institution’s commitment to supporting veterans, active-duty service members and their families.
“Supporting students like Jayden is at the heart of our mission,” Military Order of the Purple Heart representative Len Crosby said. “By investing in education, we honor the service and sacrifices of veterans and their families.”
The Military Order of the Purple Heart was founded in 1932. Scholarships are one of several ways the organization invests in education and community support.
