The Northlake-Mandeville Rotary club held its 26th annual Sunday with Scholars Banquet on April 28 to honor six local high school seniors from the Mandeville area and award each of them a scholarship.
Two of the students won a named memorial scholarship for $1,000. Each of the other four won Rotary scholarships worth $12,000 that will be meted out $1,500 per semester during college. And the Sunday with Scholars event raised money to benefit the Northlake-Mandeville club’s scholarship foundation.
The six, selected by a committee, all plan to attend a four-year college or university; have attained outstanding academic achievement; and have demonstrated commitment to the community through various volunteer, school and civic organizations.
The six scholars honored at the breakfast held at Beau Chene Country Club included:
Abby Barletter, a Fontainebleau High School graduate who last year attended the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards camp, will attend Southeastern Louisiana University for a double major in linguistics and education, in preparation for becoming a speech or English as a second language teacher.
Morgan Evans, an Archbishop Hannan High School graduate, plans to earn a degree in mechanical engineering at Louisiana Tech University and pursue a career as a robotics engineer.
Kara Henry, a Mandeville High School graduate, will attend William Carey University where she will play softball and major in biology and minor in chemistry. She plans to become a teacher, preferably a high school science teacher.
Sophia Coglaiti, a Mandeville High School graduate, will attend Louisiana State University and major in kinesiology as she prepares to become a physician assistant.
Madeline Griffith, also a Mandeville High School graduate, will attend Louisiana State University to major in computer engineering, with the goal of working for the artificial intelligence computing company Nvidia after graduation.
Everett Dodds, a graduate of Lakeshore High School, who also attended the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards camp, will attend the University of Alabama to major in film and creative media in preparation for a filmmaking career.
The scholarship recipients will return to the Rotary club quarterly throughout their college careers to update and visit with club members and provide a copy of their grades each semester.
