Northwestern Mutual is investing in Milwaukee’s future workforce by supporting public school students through its pipeline program, which offers scholarships, mentorships, and hands-on experiences.
Audra Brennan from the Northwestern Mutual Foundation said, “We know that as one of the largest employers in the community, we have a role. It’s really part of our future success to invest in the future workforce. Part of that strategy, and the way we do that, is to build pathways.”
Christopher Moore and Dillon Guthrie are two former Milwaukee Public Schools students who have found success through the Northwestern Mutual pathway.
Guthrie, a current University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee student and former Rufus King High School student, is now software engineering intern at the company after discovering his passion at a Northwestern Mutual tech camp.
“The purpose of the high tech minicamp was they exposed you to so many things across tech and I was able to be with my team I’m currently interning with,” Guthrie said. “It showed me so many different varieties of tech and so many different pathways, that it really helped me narrow down and realize that I love what I do.”
Moore, a 2021 graduate of Ronald Reagan High School, went on to study at Marquette University and accepted an internship and eventual full-time job with Northwestern Mutual. He now works as a government community relations outreach specialist, but says Northwestern Mutual had a constant presence at his high school.
“Before I even had an internship, I was already at Northwestern Mutual just trying to take it all in and getting an experience of what corporate life is like to an extent, right?” Moore said. “We had people come in and talk to us about professionalism and building our brand.”
In the last year, Northwestern Mutual has invested $4 million to support academic success, with $71 million invested over the last 30 years.
Moore and Guthrie say they are proud to work for a company that supports their hometown.
“It shows that they care,” said Moore. “I mean, they’re just not occupying a space in Milwaukee. They want to give back. They want to create that environment to help students progress mentally and professionally. They’re really investing into the future of Milwaukee.”
Guthrie added, “These MPS schools and all the kids we have in Milwaukee, there’s so much talent that possibly leaves for other cities or wouldn’t get a job here otherwise. So I think it’s great to really unlock their potential and grow the company as a whole.”
Moore and Guthrie are also recipients of the ‘All-In Milwaukee’ scholarship, a program in which Northwestern Mutual has invested $3 million.
