NORTHFIELD — When Norwich University senior Navy Midshipman Emily Landon was selected as a finalist for the Navy Federal Credit Union ROTC All-American Scholarship Program, she was surprised and honored. Surprised because she did not know she had been nominated, and honored because the award recognizes excellence and leadership.
The scholarship, started in 2018, is open to all 542 college-level Reserve Officers’ Training Corps programs in the country. Since the scholarship started, Navy Federal Credit Union has received nearly 1,800 ROTC student nominations. This year, 265 students were nominated representing 202 schools. Navy Federal chose 15 finalists.
“Navy Federal Credit Union’s ROTC All-American Scholarship Program seeks to honor the best and brightest ROTC seniors across the nation and highlight the rising senior ROTC student who best embodies the pillars of the program: leadership, military excellence, scholarship, and service. Emily was chosen for her dedication to the ROTC program and the University, her extraordinary physical and mental fortitude in military pursuits, her ranking in the top 25% of both her academic class and ROTC program, and her commitment to better the community,” said Olivia Miller, vice president of strategic partnerships and community impact at Navy Federal Credit Union. Miller is a veteran and one of the judges for the program this year.
ROTC programs train students to become officers in the U.S. Armed Forces through a combination of academic coursework and military training.
As one of the 15 finalists, Landon received a $2,500 scholarship and Norwich University clubs received a $1,500 donation.
From the list of finalists, Navy Federal will select and honor three as the top ROTC All-American Scholarship Program Students of the Year. The Students of the Year will be announced in early December and will each receive a $6,500 scholarship, and $5,000 will be donated to the school. They also will be honored guests of the college football’s Go Bowling Military Bowl on Dec. 27 and featured on ESPN’s broadcast of the game.
Lt. Jacob Kruchoski, a student adviser and teacher at Norwich, nominated Landon.
“Emily has been active in the battalion, has done an excellent job, and is a great leader,” he said.
In her four years at Norwich, Landon has held a number of leadership roles including division lead chief petty officer, first sergeant, platoon sergeant, and squad leader. In addition, she has been active with the school’s ECHO Company, which sponsors the annual Halloween haunted house in Northfield and a Christmas party for area children. Currently she has a 3.95 grade average and is on track to graduate summa cum laude.
Originally from Colorado Springs, Landon chose Norwich in part because of the soccer program and because she knew she wanted to pursue a military career. Military may be in her DNA, as her dad Mike, a master sergeant, served 21 years in the Air Force. That said, Emily is the only one of six Landon girls who chose the military.
“I chose Norwich for soccer but stayed because of the people,” she said. “My mom is from the East and she remembered this college and knew I wanted to attend a military school. I love the school and like the quiet vibe of the town.”
Landon played soccer for two years and left the program when her role as a ROTC student leader grew.
Landon is pursuing a double major in mechanical engineering and naval science and is aspiring to become a naval flight officer. After graduation next spring she will work briefly at Norwich and eventually attend flight school at the naval base in Pensacola, Florida.
“Out of all the ROTCs in the nation and all the cadets who were nominated to be chosen as one of the 15 finalists it is incredible and, at least for me, it is a testament to all the hard work I’ve put in over the last four years,” she said.
Landon is the second Norwich University student to be selected a Navy Federal Credit Union scholarship finalist.
