Notre Dame Law School Faculty Present Private Law Scholarship in Singapore – University of Notre Dame

The Law School
In early August, a delegation of Notre Dame Law School faculty traveled to Singapore to take part in two major workshops on private law. Professors Paul Miller, Rev. Patrick Reidy, C.S.C., Sadie Blanchard, and Patrick Corrigan engaged with leading international scholars and deepened ties with two of Asia’s top universities—the National University of Singapore (NUS) and Singapore Management University (SMU).
On August 4 and 5, Professor Miller led the delegation’s presence at the Oxford Studies in Private Law Theory Workshop, hosted by NUS. Miller and Professor John Oberdiek, of Rutgers Law School, edit the biennial Oxford Studies volumes for Oxford University Press, under the auspices of their series Oxford Private Law Theory.
At NUS, Miller, Oberdiek and their NUS counterpart Professor James Penner moderated sessions that featured presentations of original work by scholars from universities including the University of Auckland, University of Hong Kong, National University of Singapore, University College London, King’s College London, University of Oxford, University of Warwick, and University of Minnesota. The work in private law theory will appear in Oxford Studies in Private Law Theory, Volume IV, which is to be published open access in 2026.
“John and I are grateful to James Penner for inviting us to the National University of Singapore and for leading its partnership with us,” said Miller. “We are also, as always, grateful to Oxford University Press for publishing the series and to Notre Dame Law School and Rutgers Law School for financial support.”
On August 6, the SMU Yong Pung How School of Law hosted the SMU-Notre Dame Commercial and Private Law Workshop, a joint roundtable that highlighted new scholarship authored by professors from both institutions. Presentations from Notre Dame Law School faculty included:
Professor Patrick Corrigan, Is Confidential Supervisory Information Material to Investors? Evaluating the Conflict Between Banking and Securities Laws
Professor Sadie Blanchard, Verifying Corporate Prosociality
Rev. Patrick Reidy, C.S.C. (with co-author Professor Nicole Stelle Garnett), Reforming Catholic Covenants
Professor Paul Miller, Good Faith as Integrity: Good Faith and the Nature of Voluntary Obligation
Reflecting on the workshop, Miller stated, “Our faculty team from Notre Dame Law School was hosted by new friends at the SMU Yong Pung How School of Law for a joint Private and Commercial Law round table. We learned a lot from our SMU colleagues and gained a deep appreciation for their work. Thank you to Man Yip and Pey Woan Lee for hosting us!”
He added, “Equally, it was gratifying for me to present alongside my outstanding colleagues Rev. Patrick Reidy, C.S.C., Sadie Blanchard, and Patrick Corrigan. We look forward to our next visit to Singapore.”
Beyond the exchange of scholarship, Notre Dame Law School’s visit to Singapore also advanced the Law School’s efforts to build strategic partnerships in Asia. Strengthening ties with the National University of Singapore and Singapore Management University supports Notre Dame Law School’s Global Lawyering Initiative, which expands opportunities for international collaboration, research, and faculty and student engagement.
Notre Dame Law School remains committed to addressing legal issues that transcend borders and to fostering relationships that help educate a “different kind of lawyer”—one prepared to serve the needs of a global society.
