SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WNDU) – Republicans are urging universities around the country to cut ties with a China-backed scholarship program, and it could impact a study abroad program at the University of Notre Dame.
According to the Associated Press, House Republicans are urging seven American universities to cut ties with the China Scholarship Council, a program they call a ā€œnefarious mechanismā€ to steal technology for the Chinese government.
The program sponsors hundreds of Chinese grad students every year at universities around the country. After graduating, they’re required to return to China for two years.
A spokesperson for Notre Dame tells WNDU 16 News Now that the university has started severing its ties with the program.
ā€œEarlier this year the university began the process of terminating its association with the scholarship program. We will, of course, respond to the inquiry and look forward to working with the committee on this important matter.ā€
