New students of NorthWest Arkansas Community College’s Bicycle Technician Program can receive scholarships for the program and free tool kits, according to a Tuesday (July 22) news release.
Denver-based Morgridge Family Foundation recently provided an $80,000 grant to NWACC for the scholarship, which will be awarded to multiple students over three years. John and Carrie Morgridge established their private philanthropic organization in 2008. The Morgridge Family Foundation Bicycle Technician Scholarship is offered in partnership with the PeopleForBikes Foundation.
This year, the scholarships will be awarded on a rolling basis until Aug. 8, and 12 scholarships will be provided. Each student can receive up to $6,500. The application deadline is July 29.
Scholarship recipients must meet several requirements, including being enrolled in the bicycle technician program, maintaining a GPA of at least 2.5, and demonstrating an interest in pursuing a career in the bicycle industry. Scholarship applications will be submitted to PeopleForBikes Foundation, and a selection committee will choose the recipients. Link here to apply.
The first eight students to enroll in the bicycle technician program will receive a Park Tool Kit valued at $1,200. Students will receive the kit on their first day of class, and they’ll get to keep it after graduation.
According to the release, most bike shops require mechanics to bring their own tools when hired. The bicycle technician program has a capacity of 24 students in each class. Those interested in enrolling can email Alex Soulard at [email protected].
