The window is open for State University of New York and City University of New York students to apply for free tuition through the state’s Excelsior Scholarship.
The Excelsior Scholarship, through the New York State Higher Education Services Corporation, is a “last dollar” program, and will cover remaining tuition costs after federal, state grants, and scholarships are applied.
Funding will apply to the spring academic term for 2024-2025 and the deadline to apply is Feb. 3.

Students who are not U.S. citizens must first submit a NYS DREAM Act application before applying for the Excelsior Scholarship program and all aid programs. Students who already receive the scholarship do not need to reapply, but Free Application for Federal Student Aid, Tuition Assistance Program or DREAM Act applications must be renewed each year.
The scholarship funding duration is based on the length of the degree being pursued: two years for students pursuing their associate degree full-time, four years for a bachelor’s degree and five years for approved five-year degree programs.
