The Obama Foundation Scholars Program at Columbia University is now accepting applications for its seventh cohort. This program offers a nine-month learning experience covering academics, practical skills, and real-world experiences to aspiring leaders worldwide. This program brings together emerging leaders who are dedicated to solving challenges in their communities and beyond. Throughout the year, Scholars will enhance their knowledge, skills, and networks to make a greater impact in their home countries. Scholars come from various fields, including education, community engagement, and sustainable development, and they represent both the U.S. and international communities.

Eligibility 

The Obama Foundation Scholars Program at Columbia University is looking for emerging leaders from the United States and around the world who:

  1. Have already made significant contributions in their field and are now at a pivotal moment in their careers.
  2. Are dedicated to serving and leading in their community, region, or country. They should also be committed to returning to these communities after completing the program to apply their enhanced skills and connections for the long-term benefit of these areas.
  3. Are proficient in English (both spoken and written).
  4. Have the ability and desire to make a positive impact on the future of their community.
  5. Show a strong dedication to inclusivity, community-mindedness, hope, courage, imagination, strategy, accountability, integrity, and resilience.

Scholar Benefits

How to Apply

To apply for the program, you’ll need to submit the following:

  1. Online Application Form
    Fill out the form online before 5 p.m. ET on December 12, 2023.
  2. Resume/Curriculum Vitae
    Provide a chronological list of your work and academic history, along with any noteworthy achievements, awards, or publications.
  3. Personal Video Statement
    Create a brief video (no more than three minutes) introducing yourself and explaining your work to the selection committee. Upload the video to a platform like YouTube or Vimeo and include the link in your online application.
  4. Short Essay Responses
    Answer the provided essay questions in the online application to help the selection committee understand your work, motivation, and how the program aligns with your career goals.
  5. English Proficiency Proof
    If English is not your native language, demonstrate proficiency by submitting scores from one of these accepted exams: TOEFL (internet-based or paper-based), IELTS, PTE Academic, or DET. Exceptions apply if you meet certain criteria outlined in the application guidelines.
  6. Minimum Score Requirements
    • TOEFL – Internet-Based Exam: 100
    • TOEFL – Paper-Based Exam: 600
    • IELTS Academic: 7
    • PTE Academic: 68
    • Duolingo English Test: 120 (75 if taken before July 2019)

  7. Letters of Recommendation
    Obtain two letters from individuals familiar with your academic, professional, or community service work. Family members or friends should not write these recommendations. They should specifically address your suitability for the Obama Foundation Scholars program.
