One of several scholars who juggled career and family, Becky at “my Dental School graduation from University of Pennsylvania with my daughter Jennifer who was then in 4th grade.”
Our generous community sees almost every weekend packed with fundraisers. Through donations and dedication, local nonprofits provide dozens of students each year with scholarships, and with them the opportunity to build the lives they’ve dreamed.
Do they make it? Have you wondered if those eager young students succeed? On Saturday, October 18, we have a chance to hear from ten scholarship recipients and learn what happened next, the impact of a scholarship during college and beyond. The Nevada County Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) has been awarding scholarships in this county since 1946; ten scholarship recipients will share their stories with us.
Four are currently in school, two in traditional paths from high school to college, and two others re-entering school after time in the workforce or building a family. Those women re-entering education are still juggling work and family, but with support pursue a career as well. Each of the four will share her challenges and achievements.
Five other women have finished college—some very recently, others more than a decade ago, and are now working, living the careers they envisioned. Some of those women have returned to Nevada County, enriching the community that supported their dreams. Local girls make good – our favorite story.
Completing the circle, one of our speakers is retired and now giving back to local scholarship programs after a successful career: the best of all endings.
The meeting will be held at Peace Lutheran Church, 828 West Main Street, Grass Valley, 9:15 – 11:15 am. It is free and open to the public.
Come enjoy these women’s journeys, and also learn all that AAUW does to support them along the way. We know many girls dream of higher education, but lack someone to guide them through the application process, or help with the required essay, or search for the right school, or find the money to attend. Once enrolled, new students still need support: First-time full-time undergraduate freshmen have a 12-month dropout rate of 22.3% (https://educationdata.org/college-dropout-rates). Challenges are formidable: money, academics, family issues, stress. That’s a lot for an eighteen-year-old to handle.
To help with those challenges, AAUW provides more than the scholarship award money. We will share all we do to ensure every girl we support completes her education – and our speakers will let us know what worked for them.
