After two decades of helping Native Hawaiians attend other private schools with financial aid, Kamehameha Schools is phasing out its Kipona Scholarship program. Current recipients can reapply yearly through the end of their eligibility periods — but otherwise, Kipona will come to an end. Too bad, as it did expand educational opportunities beyond Kamehameha’s three campuses.
In 2024, some $7.1 million was awarded to 828 Kipona scholars, with annual awards averaging $5,000 to $7,000. This school year, Kamehameha’s program helped Native Hawaiian students attend 75 partner schools statewide.
