MIFFLINTOWN — Juniata County Commissioners met Tuesday to celebrate local scholarship recipients, to address contracts, and conduct other business.
Each year two students from Juniata County receive scholarships from Nestler College.
The 2025 Nestler College Scholarships were given to Autumn Fronk who was present at the meeting and Darin Kint who was absent but equally excited to receive this scholarship.
Fronk shared that she just graduated from East Juniata High School with the highest SAT score and is attending the University of Pittsburgh for biology.
Each student receives $45,000 to further their education which is funded by the Richard J. and Lela A. Nestler College Scholarship Fund Trust.
Any graduating senior interested in applying for this scholarship can visit their school’s guidance office at East Juniata High School and Juniata High School to fill out an application.
Applications are also available at The Juniata Valley Bank Trust and Investment Division and on the Juniata County website.
The student from each public high school with the highest combined Scholastic Aptitude Test (S.A.T.) scores shall receive the scholarship.
If two or more students from each high school have identical scores, criteria has been established to break the tie.
The recipients of the scholarship will have their tuition paid to the extent of the funds available for the academic year following their high school graduation.
The students’ information and SAT scores are verified with each high school’s guidance counselor.
The applicants must apply for the scholarship by May 1 with their guidance counselor.
Juniata County Commissioners also spoke with Ashley Baxter of the Juniata County Children and Youth.
Baxter attended the meeting to receive approval for purchase of services agreements for Juniata County Children and Youth Services and 10 different foster care agencies and residential facilities for kids in their care or probation’s care.
Commissioner Alice Gray asked Baxter how she monitors all the different contracts and Baxter assured Gray that they have a system with spreadsheets and emails.
These contracted agencies and facilities include Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Services, Inc. Manos House, Families United Network, Inc., the KidsPeace Corporation, Adelphoi Village Inc., Bethany Christian Service, Centre County Youth Service Bureau, Merakey Pennsylvania, Pennsylvania Mentor, Outside In School of Experiential Education, Inc., and TRAC Services for Families.
Commissioners also:
• Approved the tax exonerations for Walker Township;
• Approved the ratification of the CDBG-IDIS check as submitted by the Juniata County Planning and Community Development Department in the amount of $446.34;
• Approved payment of the checks in the amount of $300,232.82;
• Approved payment of the Juniata County Hazardous Material check to Wex Bank in the amount of $31.27 and a check to Compros Inc. in the amount of $1,753.01;
• Approved the May 2025 monthly activity report submitted by Juniata County Children & Youth Services Office;
• Approved hiring Katie Hosler to fill the vacant Deputy Prothonotary/Clerk of Court position effective Monday, June 23. Hosler will be replacing Susan Yorks who resigned April 18.
