Two local McDonald's locations participated in a Black History Month program to give back to the community.
The McDonald’s Black History Makers of Tomorrow program awarded scholarships to two local students in the Ohio Valley.
Alex Reese, of Martins Ferry and Noah West, from Steubenville, were awarded $1,000 each for being recognized leaders in the community.
"At the end of the day, I know our organization aims to not only be a McDonald’s in the community, but a community McDonald’s,” McDonald’s franchisee Trey Locke said. “These are our customers; these are the people that come in and out every day and they're the reason we have a business to run. So, giving back to the community and being a part of the community has to be essential with the golden arches.”
Reese plans to attend Youngstown State University to study nursing. He was nominated by not only his principal, but also his bus driver, who spoke about his academic dedication and commitment to the local community.
"It means a lot,” Reese said. “I've lived here my whole life so anything I can do for this community I'm going to make sure I do it."
West said he is still deciding what university to attend, but he plans to study political science or public policy. He was nominated by Steubenville High School's Dean of Students Adele Filtz for his leadership and dedication to his cultural heritage and community.
"It means a lot,” West said. “First, the scholarship being for black history and preserving my culture. It was just really important. I thought it was a great award, and I felt honored."
This is the first time either of the local franchises participated in the program and they are pleased to show support to their respective communities and continue to find ways to give back.
"So, the Stoltz-Moore organization is always giving scholarships to students in bands and different things like that, so this is the first time we've done it for Black History Month and I'm sure it's not the last time,” Martins ferry McDonald's manager Terry Endsley said.
