Thanks to a committee of eight dedicated members of The Old Guard of West Hartford, a very successful golf tournament was held on May 20, 2025.
With this tournament, numerous records were set. Thirty-seven businesses and organizations committed to sponsor the event. Door prize donations were provided by businesses and individuals, which were distributed to 48 golfers and 12 luncheon attendees. Attendees had the opportunity to bid on 10 silent auction items. Golfers purchased many Mulligan Cards. All of these were the largest in the history of the annual event.
It was a wonderful day for a great cause. The money raised – $15,903 – goes to the West Hartford YMCA’s Camp Scholarship Fund, enabling many kids from families with financial needs to benefit from YMCA camp programs.
The tournament was held at Stanley Golf Course in New Britain, with Howie Friday, the head pro, being a gracious host. A buffet dinner followed at The Back Nine Tavern; Don Jenkins and his staff provided delicious food and a great atmosphere. And the sun shined brightly!
Special thanks go to Kilwins West Hartford which was the Tournament Title Sponsor again this year. Located in Blue Back Square, the store offers delightful, made-on-site chocolates, fudge and ice cream. Kathleen Allen, owner of Kilwins West Hartford with her husband Jay, considers this event to be near and dear to her heart, as the Camp Scholarship Fund helps many kids to have access to and experience life-changing camp programs.
John Keleher, who completed his term as Old Guard President in May, said this about the tournament: “As a past president of Old Guard and YMCA board member I am doubly impressed! The Old Guard comes through again for local charity and I am thankful from the Y perspective – that so many deserving kids will get to go to camp.”
Clem Sayers, the current president of The Old Guard, wrote, “The Kilwins Swing for the Kids Golf Tournament is the premier event of the year for the Old Guard. Under Chuck Hasbrouck’s leadership and the commitment of Old Guard members it is truly a success. $15,903 for the YMCA Camp Scholarship Fund is amazing! We are all very proud.”
“We are truly thankful for the Old Guard’s continued support of the West Hartford YMCA,” said Donelle Daigle, executive director of the West Hartford YMCA. “Their generosity has allowed us to carry out our mission and provide lifechanging summer camp experiences for many youth in the West Hartford community.“
