Three Onslow County high school graduates are among the 14 students from eastern North Carolina who have been selected to join the fourth cohort of the N.C. State University College of Education Transformational Scholarships Program.
The program, which is made possible through a charitable grant from the Anonymous Trust, provides scholarships to high school students from eastern North Carolina who plan to return to the region to teach after graduating from the NCSU College of Education.
Each scholar receives a minimum of $10,000 per year for up to four years, with additional financial support available to those in greater need, said Cherry Crayton, executive director of marketing and communication for the College of Education.
Scholars also have access to funds that support professional development, like study abroad and conference participation.
During their time in the College of Education, students will engage in field experiences, summer work, student teaching and other activities to equip them to return to eastern North Carolina as teachers after completing their undergraduate degrees, Crayton said.
Students also receive direct mentoring from faculty and education leaders and will develop lifelong relationships with other members in the cohort.
Transformational scholars from Onslow County in this year’s cohort include Dixon High School graduate and elementary education major Elizabeth Cowen, Swansboro High School graduate and elementary education major Carly Kincaid, and Jacksonville High School graduate and mathematics education major Emmy Taylor.
“Each of these future educators carries a deep connection to eastern North Carolina,” said Allison Mitchall, NCSU College of Education assistant dean for student success.
“Their commitment to return home to teach in the communities that helped shape them will make a lasting difference for local students. We are excited and proud to have them in our incoming class.”
Others in the cohort include Katie Del Key, from Brunswick County; Chris DeSousa, from Craven County; Jayleigh Locklear, from Cumberland County; McKenna Branch, from Edgecombe County; Lindsey Cliser, from Martin County; Diana Harper, from Pamlico County; Chloe Hammonds, from Robeson County; and Alondra Acosta, Daniel Aguilar, Heiley Avila Ponce and Brianna Jackson, all from Sampson County.
