Toronto, ON – The Ontario Hockey League today announced that a record 363 players have been awarded Academic Scholarships for the 2010-11 year.
The 363 OHL Academic Scholarship mark represents the highest number of players to ever receive an OHL Scholarship, showing an increase of eight players from the previous record of 355 set last year. This season, 144 of the scholarships have been awarded to student athletes that are currently playing in the league, with another 219 scholarships awarded to graduated players that are enrolled in 66 different post-secondary institutions across North America. Of the 219 graduate players, 155 are currently playing Canadian Interuniversity Sport hockey for 24 different school teams.
“The OHL is very proud of the record success of the OHL Scholarship Program that continues to benefit so many of our student athletes,” said OHL Commissioner David Branch. “The OHL continues to be a leading supplier of talent to both the National Hockey League and Canadian Interuniversity Sport by offering players the best of both worlds when it comes to hockey and academic goals.”
The 144 current players include Erik Gudbranson of the Kingston Frontenacs, third overall selection in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft and last season’s OHL Academic Player of the Year. The 219 graduate players includes CIS Player of the Year and Barrie Colts graduate Hunter Tremblay of the University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds.
“The OHL Scholarship Program is one of the most comprehensive in North America offering flexible and financially rewarding scholarships” said OHL Director of Recruitment and Education Services Joe Birch. “While playing in the OHL, players and their families receive the opportunity to play in the premiere development league without jeopardizing his academic standing.”
For the second straight season the University of Guelph leads the way with 29 OHL Academic Scholarship recipients followed by the University of Western Ontario with 24, and Brock University with 21 OHL players enrolled. Leaders in CIS hockey include the Western Mustangs who have 13 OHL Scholarship recipients ahead of the Windsor Lancers who have 12 former OHL players on scholarship, and both the Guelph Gryphons and Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks who each have 11 OHL graduates.
The OHL Scholarship Program is funded by the member Clubs of the OHL.
While playing in the OHL, every player is on a full scholarship which covers tuition, textbooks, compulsory fees and room and board as paid by his OHL Member Team. Once a player graduates from the OHL, he will receive a minimum scholarship of tuition, textbooks and compulsory fees towards an undergraduate degree for each year played in the Ontario Hockey League. An OHL Scholarship can also be applied to Technical or Trade Schools, Firefighting or EMS in addition to the traditional university or college four-year undergraduate degree or diploma. Scholarships can be utilized at any recognized university or college in the world.
