In recognition of the Sorbara Family's generosity and dedication to philanthropy, Ontario Tech University has named the lobby in the Software Informatics Research Centre (SIR)  the Sorbara Family Lobby. SIR houses the university's Office of the Registrar, serves as a hub for campus tours, and features several labs and flexible learning spaces equipped with the latest technology.
The Sorbara Family recently donated $1 million to the university's capital fund, which will support the development and outfitting of high-tech facilities for students. Through continued investments in infrastructure and adaptable learning environments, Ontario Tech delivers innovative, dynamic and impactful educational experiences while expanding the options available to students.
In addition to their capital investment, Edward Sorbara contributed $80,000 to empower student success. Eighty Ontario Tech students have received scholarships, established in honour of Dr. Edward Sorbara's 80th birthday. The Sorbara Family's support allows Ontario Tech students to focus on their academic goals by lessening their financial barriers.
“I am incredibly grateful to receive the Edward Sorbara Entrance Scholarship. It's surreal to see my hard work not only pay off but also be recognized,” says Eunice Caputolan, a second-year Mechanical Engineering – Energy Engineering specialization student in the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science. “As a scholarship recipient, I can tell you first-hand that this gift not only provides a financial boost but also enhances students' mental health and educational success. It shows students that they are seen, believed in and worthy of support.”
The Sorbara Family has a rich history of supporting the communities they have helped build. In 1942, Sam Sorbara founded what is now the Sorbara Group of Companies, a leading real estate development, investment and management firm. More than 40 years ago, the family established The Sam Sorbara Charitable Foundation to further their commitment to elevating and strengthening communities in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area.
In recognition of their outstanding accomplishments in business, community volunteerism and philanthropic efforts, Ontario Tech awarded honorary Doctor of Laws degrees to Dr. Edward Sorbara and Dr. Christina Sorbara at Spring Convocation in 2023.
Quotes
My grandfather, Sam Sorbara, used to say that fortune and wealth are gifts that life gives us so we can share them with others. We are honoured and proud to continue that legacy and give back to future generations within our community. When I first toured Ontario Tech, I was amazed by the incredible innovation happening in our backyard. We are proud to support this cutting-edge work and empower the leaders of tomorrow through the Edward Sorbara Entrance Scholarships.”
-Christina Sorbara, Vice-President, Corporate Knowledge, Sorbara Group of Companies, Chair, The Sam Sorbara Charitable Foundation, Doctor of Laws, honoris causa
