OSHAWA, ONTARIO – Ontario Tech University recognizes the impact of evolving trade and economic policies, including shifts in tariff structures, that will be felt by workers and families in Oshawa, and across Canada’s auto industry. In support, Ontario Tech University proudly announces the creation of three new bursaries specifically for prospective students whose parents work in the auto industry.
These bursaries recognize auto industry workers’ vital contributions to the Canadian economy, and the pivotal role those families and the sector have had in shaping the establishment and growth of Ontario Tech University.
“We understand the challenges that many families in our community face, particularly in industries that are undergoing significant change,” says Dr. Steven Murphy, President and Vice-Chancellor, Ontario Tech University. “These bursaries underscore our collaboration with the auto industry and the Oshawa community, and ensure that the children of those who’ve contributed to our community have every opportunity to excel academically.”
As part of Ontario Tech’s ongoing efforts to address the challenges facing the automotive industry, the new scholarship program will alleviate some of the financial burdens on families while encouraging the pursuit of post-secondary education in fields critical to the region’s future economic development.
The bursaries will be awarded to children of individuals employed in the auto industry, with preference given to those pursuing studies in engineering, computer science and related fields. The application process will be open to high school graduates in Ontario, and eligible students can apply for the bursary once they’ve accepted their offer of admission.
As a proud member of the Oshawa community, the automotive manufacturing capital of Canada, Ontario Tech University is deeply committed to advancing community growth and strengthening the connections between education, innovation and industry. The university is recognized for its strong research relationships with the auto industry. Through industry collaborations like Project Arrow, faculty and students undertake revolutionary research and development with automotive companies to drive technological advancements in areas such as electric and hybrid vehicles, autonomous systems and sustainable manufacturing.
Ontario Tech’s strategic partnerships with the auto industry ensure that the next generation of students is prepared for future automotive advancements, while continuing to contribute to the sector’s long-term success.
