Grants and Resources for Sustainability
Deadline: 9-January-2026
The Ontario Arts Council has announced its Recommender Grants Program to assist theatre creators to develop new work.
The program enables theatre creators to apply through Nova, OAC’s online grant application system, to designated theatre companies serving as recommenders. Applicants may submit up to five applications per year, and recommenders are responsible for assessing applications and submitting their grant recommendations to OAC.
Grant amounts range from a minimum of $1,000 to a maximum of $3,000. It is possible to receive more than one Recommender Grant for Theatre Creators grant within a single program year, either toward one project or multiple projects. Applicants may receive recommendations from multiple recommenders in the same program year.
Individuals and organizations without OAC operating funding may receive up to three project grants per calendar year for different activities. Operating grant recipients may receive up to two project grants in a year.
The program funds any type of theatre-based creation activity but does not support workshops (unless intended for creation), productions, or activities in French. Activities must begin after the recommender theatre’s deadline, finish no earlier than six weeks after receiving grant results, and be completed within two years of receiving funds.
Due to the volume of applications and limited funds, grants awarded may be smaller than the requested amount. If an applicant is awarded more than one grant through a single third-party recommender program year, these will collectively count as one grant toward the three-grant limit for 2025.
Eligible applicants include professional theatre artists who are residents of Ontario, as well as ad hoc groups and collectives composed primarily of Ontario residents. Individual applicants must be professional artists or arts professionals, at least 18 years of age, Canadian citizens or permanent residents (or have an application pending), and have lived in Ontario for at least 12 consecutive months before applying.
Ad hoc groups and collectives must consist of at least two eligible members, with at least half of the members residing in Ontario. Incorporated not-for-profit organizations must be incorporated in Ontario or federally, have a head office in Ontario, and be governed by a volunteer or advisory board.
For-profit organizations must be Ontario-based, Canadian-owned book or magazine publishers eligible for OAC publishing programs. Eligible colleges, universities, municipalities, school boards, First Nations, and Indigenous-administered schools must be Ontario-based and engage professional Ontario artists or arts organizations.
Applicants with overdue or unresolved final reports from previous OAC grants are ineligible to apply. Applications may only be submitted for one grant per program per deadline, and multiple project grants cannot be awarded for the same activity. Third-party recommender programs are exceptions to this rule.
Grant recipients must submit a final report in Nova, detailing the project outcomes and how OAC’s recognition requirements were met. Recommenders, authorized by OAC, receive applications, review them, and make recommendations.
Funding decisions are reviewed by OAC for eligibility, and successful applicants are notified through Nova. Grants are paid directly by OAC and are not to be treated as payments to or from the recommender organization.
Applicants with conflicts of interest—such as being a staff or board member, or an immediate family member of one—may not apply to that recommender. Recommenders must avoid conflicts of interest in their assessment and recommendation processes.
The 2025–26 program runs until January 9, 2026, with the list of participating recommenders available at the start of September and subject to updates throughout the program year.
