Flutes, cellos and marimbas echoed through Laurel Manor Recreation on April 6 during the Opera Club of The Villages’ auditions for its Harold S. Schwartz Music Scholarship Program.
The performances were so stunning, the club gave out two first-place awards for the first time in its history — to Emily Veri from The Villages High School and Jason Tejada-Chancay from Montverde Academy.
“These two were just so good, the judges couldn’t select one over the other,” club president Gerri Piscitelli said.
Eleven students were given five minutes each to perform a musical piece in front of a panel of judges for the chance to win one of eight scholarships.
Auditioning students came from The Villages High School, South Sumter High School, Montverde Academy, Hampden DuBose Academy, South Lake High School, Vanguard High School, Eustis High School and Forest High School.
