The Woodland Park chapter of the Philanthropic Educational Association awarded $1,000 scholarships to graduating seniors Alli Orellana and Kaitlyn Meyers.
In the past five years, the chapter donated $5,000 in scholarships for women who graduated from Woodland Park or Cripple Creek/Victor high schools.
“We focus on scholarships for women,” said Carol Holcomb, publicity chair. “Because education changes lives.”
An international organization with 200,000 members, PEO awards scholarships to students seeking bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral degrees, in addition to trade schools.
“Not all choose not to go to college,” Holcomb said, adding that the group recently funded tuition for a student to earn certification in cosmetology.
The recipients wrote winning essays and included two letters of recommendation along with their areas of educational interest. Orellana intends to study political science in addition to the science of soil and crops at Colorado State University.
Meyers intends to study environmental policy at either CSU, UC San Diego or Vtech.
To keep the scholarship program going, the Woodland Park chapter of PEO presents Acoustic Eidolon in Concert at 3 p.m. June 1 at the Ute Pass Cultural Center. Tickets are $35 and available online at: https://peochapteril.ticketspice.com/acoustic-eidolon-in-concert.
