Several local organizations have awarded scholarships over the last couple of months, recognizing students’ academic achievements and community involvement.
Alexandria Parker and Issac Mead, recent graduates from Spring Valley High School, were awarded $1,275 scholarships to be used for their post-graduation education from the Westmoreland Woman’s Club. President Beverly Beldon presented the scholarships on May 16 during the school’s senior awards ceremony.
Eight students received the 2025 Ohio Valley Bank 4-H scholarships. To date, the bank has helped 269 4-H members pay for college through the program, according to a release. Winners are determined by 4-H advisors and volunteers, who take 4-H involvement and individual experiences into account when picking scholarship recipients.
The 2025 scholarship winners are:
VFW Post 6878 member Scott R. Johnson awarded scholarships to four graduating seniors from Fairland High School.
Evan King received the Fairland Senior Scholarship, while Morgan Butcher, Avery Byers, and Kierra Nichols were VFW Auxiliary winners.
The Family Medicine Foundation of West Virginia announced Morgan Christian has been selected to receive the Educational Seed for Physicians Scholarship for the 2025 academic year
Christian, who is entering her second year at the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine this fall, will receive $6,000 annually for each year she remains in good standing as a medical student.
The award is forgivable if the recipient completes an approved Family Medicine Residency and practices Family Medicine in West Virginia for a minimum of two years (or one year if awarded in the fourth year only).
Twenty-four high school seniors have been selected as West Virginia’s sixth cohort of Underwood-Smith Teaching Scholars. These students will receive a scholarship of up to $10,000 per year — or $40,000 total — for their college education as they prepare to pursue careers as West Virginia teachers.

The West Virginia Department of Education announced 30 career and technical education students as recipients of the 2025 Albert Yanni Scholarship. The students earned the $2,000 award to assist with their education and/or training related to their career aspirations.

Kody Haddix received one of two annual scholarships given by the Kiwanis Club of East Greenup County to Key Club members at Raceland-Worthington High School.
Haddix, who plans to attend Eastern Kentucky University to major in aerospace management, picked up the $1,000 scholarship check at a Kiwanis Club meeting earlier this month at Giovanni’s Pizza in Flatwoods, where Scholarship Chair Lisa Henderson and Kiwanis President Don Golightly presented it.
Forty-six scholarships, totaling $81,250, have been presented to men and women from the Foundation for the Tri-State Community, Inc., according to Foundation CEO Kathryn Lamp.
In West Virginia, Jeanna Bradford, from Mingo Central High School, received the James G. Fisher Memorial Scholarship.
