NEWS RELEASE
YMCA OF SIMCOE/MUSKOKA
************************
The fourth annual Skid Watson YMCA Scholarship is now open to applications from graduating Orillia high school students. Three scholarships, each for $1,500, are available to students who exemplify the YMCA’s values of kindness, integrity, inclusiveness, respect, and optimism.
Students who are interested in applying are asked to submit a letter of support from a teacher or community leader, and either an essay (1,000-word maximum) or a video presentation (maximum 5 minutes in length) that showcases their demonstrated commitment to Y values, commitment to building a healthier community, their post-secondary and/or professional development plans, and how their experience will benefit the community.
Named in memory of local humanitarian and leader, Gordon Alexander “Skid” Watson, these scholarships recognize his commitment to lifelong learning, youth development, and the YMCA movement in our community as well as across Canada, and throughout the world.
Kate Meeks, Senior Director of Philanthropy at the YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka, said, “This scholarship aims to recognize the incredible students in our community who are passionate about learning and community involvement, much like Skid Watson himself. At the YMCA, we believe that by supporting youth and giving them an opportunity to pursue their passions, our communities are strengthened both now and for generations to come. We are very proud to support local students on their educational journeys.”
One of the previous Scholarship recipients, Sadie Harding, who is studying Carpentry and Renovation at Fleming College, says, “The scholarship allowed me to buy quality tools for my program, which has made all the difference in my work. I was also accepted into a mentorship program called Building Bridges, which partners young women with female mentors in their respective trades. I am so grateful to have received this opportunity and excited for what the future holds.”
Eligible students must attend one of the following Orillia schools: Orillia Secondary School, Twin Lakes Secondary School, or Patrick Fogarty Catholic Secondary School.
The deadline to apply to the Skid Watson YMCA Scholarship is May 9, 2025. Applications can be submitted online at www.ymcasm.ca/SkidWatsonScholarship. Winners will be selected in late May/early June and presented with their scholarship at their school’s graduation ceremony.
