The Miles Morland Foundation has announced the shortlist for the 2025 Morland African Writing Scholarships.
The foundation received over 800 entries from published African writers this year, more than 300 entries above last year’s total. The shortlist of 20 writers was selected by experienced readers who assessed each submission purely on literary merit.
Established in 2013 by British philanthropist Miles Morland, the scholarship awards £18,000 to four winners annually, paid monthly over twelve months, to allow them time to produce the first draft of a completed book. Non-fiction writers may receive additional funding for up to eighteen months for research. The scholarship is open to anyone writing in English who was born in Africa, or both of whose parents were born in Africa. It is considered one of the most prestigious writing scholarships on the African continent.
South Africa leads the shortlist with seven writers, followed by Nigeria with six. Writers from Cameroon and the DRC also feature on this year’s list.
The judges will select four winners on November 21, with the announcement following on November 22.
