Being a great shot with a rifle can pay big dividends. Kiersten Allen of Somerset, is headed to the University of Akron this fall on a scholarship for nursing, due in great part to her shooting skills with the Jerome Sportsmen’s Junior Rifle Team. Along with studying anatomy and physiology this autumn, Allen will be stepping up to the firing line as a member of the Akron team.
“I really liked the coaches and the team. Going out to Akron and competing with the club. They have a really good team. They’re all friends and hang out together. It’s not overly competitive,” said Allen, who was home-schooled, yet also shot on the Somerset High School team. Her best small bore (.22 rimfire) match score with the Jerome team was 579 of 600. And she shot a 609 with the Somerset team in a category where Olympic-level scores are 630. Besides outstanding shooting scores, Allen’s grades and personality were a determining factor for Akron.
