WATCH: 103 students awarded in scholarships worth over $1 million
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – We all know college can get very expensive and even put people in lifelong debt.
Yet for some students at Whitehaven High School this will not be a problem: 103 students were awarded scholarships collectively worth over $1 million.
Applying for scholarship and colleges – it was not always the easiest task. But students at Whitehaven High School took on the challenge and now could be debt free scholars.
One parent FOX13 spoke with said she is beyond grateful.
“One of the rules in my house is education is free,” Kristy Smith said.
Her daughter, a Whitehaven High School senior, took heed to this rule.
Kmyra Smith applied to over 200 schools received scholarships to over 100 colleges.
She said the process was tedious, but it did pay off.
“I was awarded $10,462,024 in scholarships,” Kmyra Smith said.
Along with her school counselors she said that the Common App made the process seemliness.
Common App is a nonprofit organization of 1000+ colleges and universities that simplifies, informs, and supports your college application journey.
The principal at Whitehaven High said he’s excited over 103 students have each been awarded 1 million dollars or more in scholarships. Something he said will help students on the path to success.
“We preach every day in Whitehaven and throughout our zone is that we want our children to be internationally competitive. So when they graduate, they’re not just graduating, competing against children who are forced to sit in across the state. They’re competing with children across this country. So they have to be educationally fit, ” Dr. Vincent Hunter said.
Now Kmyra hopes to join the Mississippi State University Bulldogs where she hopes to study to become a veterinarian.
Smith said that although she was a straight-A student she was not a great test taker, yet she still received money from colleges across the US.
She hopes her story inspires other students to apply for scholarships no matter what .
“You can at least it’s like 12 colleges and you will be at a million honestly,” Kmyra Smith said.
