The Kiwanis Club of Pacific Beach recently gave $6,000 in scholarships, shared among four seniors at Mission Bay High School.
The scholarships — $1,500 each — were awarded on May 21 during the school’s annual awards ceremony. The recipients were Katherine Foulks, Cayden Hanson, Linnea Liljenstrand-Mjoe and Cayla McAllister.
Foulks is headed to New York University and has aspirations to have a career in law.
She was described as a natural leader and was selected for displaying her ability to balance academics, community service and a part-time job. Foulks also plays an integral role in her large household, proving her dedication to contributing to the betterment of her community and society.
Hanson plans to attend Princeton University and wants to major in aerospace engineering so he can eventually work for NASA.
He ranked in the top three of his class and was called an exceptional leader for his efforts as the Kiwanis Key Club president and division executive assistant. Hanson was also captain of his volleyball teams, in Academic League, COSMOS, Quantum Research and Mock Trial.
Liljenstrand-Mjoen plans to major in international relations at the University of California Davis.
She was a star athlete on Mission Bay’s field hockey team and spent many hours volunteering in Balboa Park for the House of Sweden. Through Rotary International, she also has volunteered in orphanages around the area, including in Mexico. Liljenstrand-Mjoen also found time to work, babysit and tutor.
McAllister wants to study forensic science at the University of California, Berkeley.
She is someone often seen helping in her community. At Mission Bay High, McAllister was ASB president, Class of 2025 president and on the varsity cheer team. She was also the Pacific Beach Town Council student ambassador, has hosted multiple blood drives and has a job.
The Kiwanis Club of Pacific Beach has offered college scholarships to Mission Bay High School seniors since 1956. Recipients are selected based on four criteria: academic standing, demonstrated leadership skills, good character and community involvement.
The club meets at 7:30 a.m. every Thursday for breakfast at Broken Yolk Cafe, 1851 Garnet Ave. in Pacific Beach. Those interested in learning more about the Kiwanians’ community activities are welcome to attend.
