The Pacific Beach Woman’s Club awarded $20,000 in scholarships, shared among 10 Mission Bay High School seniors.
The scholarships were presented during Mission Bay High’s awards ceremony on May 21. The recipients were Jayden Bailey, Cynthia Carrillo, Kailyn Emerson, Angel Gomez, Isha Graves, Cayla McAllister, Crystal Rios, Summer Rohr, Addison Shapiro and Lucy Worms.
Club officials said the recipients were selected based on their academic accomplishments, volunteer work, extracurricular involvement, employment, family commitments and goals in higher education as articulated in their personal statements.
This spring, the club celebrated its 130th anniversary of providing service and investment in Pacific Beach and greater San Diego. The scholarship money was raised during its annual High Tea.
Bailey said he will be a first-generation college student, would like to major in finance and aspires to become the first successful businessman in his family. He was praised for having a strong work ethic that has helped him grow a fierce desire to be the best in everything he does.
He was a student-athlete, honor student and received the Caring IB Learner Trait Award in IB Psychology for demonstrating empathy, collaboration and support within the classroom. Bailey also plays guitar, has a part-time job, surfs and is a two-time recipient of the Certificate of Academic Merit.
Carrillo, who will be a first-generation college student, said she wants to major in business in college and would also like to join a nursing program. She was noted for being “grounded, kind-hearted and the kind of person others are naturally drawn to.”
During high school she was a peer tutor in the special education classroom, where she was a role model for the students. Carrillo also played rugby, is bilingual, and was in the Eco Club and Cesar Chavez Service Club. In the latter, she volunteered with Urban Street Angels and Autism Tree.
Emerson was a candidate to receive an International Baccalaureate diploma from Mission Bay High. She plans to major in human resources management at the University of Mississippi and stated an interest in having a career where she makes people feel respected and valued.
She participated in Associated Student Body, First Generation Scholars, varsity cheer, student council and was a Link Crew leader. Emerson was also a Girl Scout for 13 years.
Gomez said she wants to attend a four-year university and aspires to have a career in the entertainment industry. She was in the Mandarin Immersion Program; is trilingual due to being fluent in Spanish, English and Mandarin; and took International Baccalaureate courses.
She made the honor roll and was a scholar-athlete involved in dance, cheer and track and field. Through Girl Scouts Gomez created a non-profit organization where she partnered with a local animal shelter to help pets get adopted. She is also in the American Legion Auxiliary and it was noted that her active involvement reflects her strong sense of community and dedication to serving others.
Graves was a full International Baccalaureate Diploma candidate who plans to work while majoring in nursing college and seeking out research opportunities in the health sciences. She is interested in being a physician assistant in the behavioral health field.
With her being a top music student who spent time in Thailand teaching violin to young students, she expressed an interest in continuing to play the violin. Graves was also in sports, volunteered in various clubs and was a peer student tutor. She was praised for making a positive impact on the Mission Bay High campus and in the Pacific Beach community.
McAllister, a full International Baccalaureate Diploma candidate, plans to attend college and major in chemistry or forensic science. She also stated an interest in continuing to dance and being a positive force wherever she goes.
She demonstrated a deep commitment to her peers, school and community. McAllister participated in Associated Student Body, was class president, was on the cheer team and was a Pacific Beach Town Council student ambassador.
Rios plans to major in jazz studies and earn teaching credentials at San Diego State University, and aspires to have a professional music career.
At Mission Bay High, she was in numerous music organizations and enrolled in the 7/8 Honors class. Rios was also an active member of the First Gen Club, participated in the Meraki Concert Series Work Study Program and was a four-year member of the varsity cheer team.
Rohr has chosen to participate in the Explore major at Arizona State University. She was described as being a natural leader who brought her sense of humor and perspective to every situation.
During high school, she worked multiple jobs and was a “big sister” at her dance studio to young dancers. Rohr was also in the Associated Student Body, the Commissioner of Athletics, on the cheer team and was a standout student participating in the Autism Tree Club and Elite Academic Academy.
Shapiro plans to major in marine biology at the University of California, San Diego. She was an International Baccalaureate Diploma candidate who said she intends to “pay it forward” in uplifting others, as she works to build a more inclusive future in science.
Her many extracurricular activities included cheer team, Asian American Pacific Island Club, Cesar Chavez Service Club, Link Crew leader, San Diego Blood Bank and dancing. Shapiro also created a documentary about wildlife at the Cabrillo National Monument, where she participated in the Conservation and Environmental Stewardship Apprenticeship Program.
Worms will attend Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and would like to have a career in nursing. At Mission Bay High she was a full International Baccalaureate candidate and made the honor roll.
During high school she interned with San Diego Junior Lifeguards, volunteered with Autism Tree and co-founded an on-campus club to support neurodiverse students. Worms was considered a leader among her peers and her actions exhibited qualities of leadership and passionate commitment to the betterment of the community.
