The Latin GRAMMY Cultural Foundation, in collaboration with the Paco de Lucía Foundation, has introduced the Paco de Lucía Legacy Scholarship, the inaugural award in its Legacy Scholarship series. This initiative aims to honor the legendary flamenco guitarist while fostering the next generation of Latin music creators by providing financial and educational support.
The scholarship offers $120,000 toward tuition and related support services, enabling recipients to attend the music institution of their choice. It is open to music students aged 17–25 with a passion for flamenco music who face financial challenges in pursuing higher education. Eligible candidates must be enrolled in a music program and can begin their studies in the fall of 2025.
Raquel “Rocky” Egusquiza, Executive Director of the Latin GRAMMY Cultural Foundation, emphasized the significance of this partnership: “It’s an honor to pay tribute to one of the most influential guitarists in flamenco and music history while paving the way for new talent.” Casilda Sánchez Varela, president of the Paco de Lucía Foundation, added, “Supporting young musicians through prestigious platforms like this scholarship is essential to preserving the artistic and personal legacy of maestros like Paco de Lucía.”
Applications for the 2025 scholarships are open until April 10, 2025, at 11:59 p.m. EDT. Applicants must submit two audition videos, two letters of recommendation, two essays, and proof of acceptance to an accredited university. Submissions are accepted in English, Spanish, or Portuguese.
In 2023, the Latin Recording Academy celebrated Paco de Lucía’s legacy with a tribute event in Cádiz, featuring performances of his iconic works by family, friends, and collaborators. The event also premiered a new recording of Cositas Buenas, performed by scholarship recipients and produced in collaboration with the Alalá Foundation and Berklee College of Music.
Over the past decade, the Latin GRAMMY Cultural Foundation has awarded 427 scholarships and invested more than $10 million in programs that nurture Latin music’s future through education and mentorship.
