BARNESVILLE — Preparing and Nurturing Education and Learning (PANEL) Inc. recently held its annual awards program in partnership with the Xi Beta Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®. The awards were given during the Xi Beta Omega’s signature event, the China Luncheon—“Porcelain and Prestige: Where Excellence Meets Elegance.” The Luncheon featured beautifully appointed tables which showcased members’ personal fine china place settings.
Held at Lamar County High School, academic, fine arts and book scholarships were awarded to graduating seniors and college students. Retiring educators received Career Milestone Awards and several community members received Community Service Awards. Other recognitions were presented to the Xi Beta Omega Member of the Year and the member who received an advanced degree in 2025. The Reverend Keynon Jackson, Pastor of Mount Zion Baptist Church was the inspirational speaker.
Academic scholarship recipients from Griffin High School were Alanna Brooks, Abreanna Daniel, Makayla Dodds and Janiyah White. Recipients from Spalding High School were Kya Driver and Winta Ykeallo. Andrew Dunford from Lamar County High School and Bowen Yarbrough from Pike County High School also received academic scholarships.
College scholarship recipients were Jhaycee Barnes (The University of Georgia) and Daquan Cooney (Howard University), who received four-year scholarships, Ramiyah Bradley (Albany State University), Kale Bryan (Georgia Southern University), Loretta Navarro (Gordon State College), Olivia Ogletree (Howard University), Abigail Tacbianan (Georgia Southern University) and Limyra Tucker (Alabama A&M University).
Serenity Callahan and Christopher Pennyman, of Lamar County High School, both of whom performed at the Luncheon, received the Cheryl R. Walker Fine Arts Award.
Winta Ykeallo of Spalding High School received the Giles and Jeannette Howard King Book Scholarship and Maurice Fletcher of Griffin High School received the Chase Alexander Barr Award.
PANEL, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) organization founded in 2003, by African American women residing in Griffin. The purpose of PANEL, Inc. is to provide educational and life enrichment activities for youth. Xi Beta Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® was chartered in 1981. Both organizations serve the communities of Henry, Lamar, Pike, Spalding and Upson Counties. Lyneil Charity is the president of PANEL, Inc.
