Time flies when you’re doling out recognition.
Since the Springfield Daily Citizen began covering sports in earnest last August, two and a half years after the growing nonprofit media outlet’s inception, it has published nearly three dozen Athlete of the Week profiles.
Also known as Citizen Athlete, the weekly feature highlights a previous week’s notable accomplishment or a recent milestone. Just about every Missouri State High School Activities Association sport and every school in Greene County and neighboring Ozark and Nixa have been represented, some more than others.
The mix of selections not only conveys the type of athletes we have in the Springfield area, but their varying personalities and interests.
Our kind sponsors Nesbitt Construction, Mercy and TelComm Credit Union have helped make this possible.
Now the fun part begins.
A four-person panel will soon vote on the top male and female Citizen Athlete selections for the 2024-2025 school year. The winners will each be awarded a $1,000 scholarship courtesy of TelComm Credit Union at a June 10 banquet at Twin Oaks Country Club, the event’s host sponsor.
Longtime local radio sports personality and play-by-play man Tom Ladd, former Daily Citizen managing editor and ex-Springfield News-Leader sportswriter Rance Burger, Missouri State women’s basketball legend and former WNBA player Jackie Stiles and Daily Citizen sportswriter Ryan Collingwood make up this year’s panel.
Winners will be informed in May.
Stay tuned for details on who is selected as this year’s top male and female athlete and for details on how to attend the banquet.
