The 2024 Patrick E. Gillette Memorial Foundation scholarships include an award of $1,000 each to 11 graduating seniors, reported board President George Gillette.

Roger N. Weiler Male Scholar Athlete Award recipients are: Carter D. Green, DeSales Catholic High School, Amrinder Singh, Romario D. Garcia, Cooper J. Yensen, all of Mac-Hi.
George Gillette founded and chairs the Pat Gillette Memorial Scholarship Foundation which since 1991 has provided scholarships to student athletes by application.
The scholarship committee chooses recipients who clearly demonstrate involvement and enthusiasm for a wide variety of interests and activities with regard for academic excellence.
Pat Gillette believed knowledge and education are gained in the classroom and in all aspects of life, George Gillette told the Union-Bulletin.
Pat Gillette, one of George’s three older brothers, died at 48 of a brain tumor in 1991.
Raised in Milton-Freewater, the Gillette brothers attended McLoughlin High School, where as a senior Pat made all-state in football and baseball.
“He was a very talented guy,” George said. He played many sports, but “didn’t ice skate so he couldn’t referee at hockey games.” However, he spent years as a high school sports officiant.
He served in the military, attended Walla Walla Community College and Portland State University then was office manager for Baldwin & Sutherland Paving in Walla Walla.
Proceeds from the foundation’s two annual sponsored fundraising golf tournaments benefit the scholarship. Altogether, the tourneys brought in $7,000 for the fund in 2023, George said.
The awards are funded from the interest income from investments and the PEG Invitational Scramble Golf Tournament, which this year is June 29-30, and the PEG Cross Country Scramble Golf Tournament, set for Sept. 15, both at the Milton-Freewater Golf Course. Call George for details at 541-938-7284.
Scholarship applications are accepted January-April 30 for consideration, through Pat Gillette Memorial Scholarship Fund Inc., 301 Catherine Ave., Milton-Freewater, OR, 97862-1814. The forms are typically available at area schools, including Touchet, DeSales, Walla Walla and McLoughlin High schools.
