A Pearl High School student was surprised with tens of thousands of dollars in scholarship money.
The surprise reveal was held Friday afternoon at the Pearl High School Performing Arts Center.
Catalina Owen received a $40,000 BigFuture Scholarship. The program has awarded more than $20 million in scholarships to more than 24,000 students around the country.
Catalina never imagined that after applying for the school funds, she would eventually land on stage to receive her big check.
“I was crying on the stage a lot. I did not expect it at all. I was very nervous standing up there on the stage,” Owen said.
“You just got to work hard and go for it. I guess anything is possible,” Owen went on to say.
Catalina took the ACT five times, scoring a 30 on the test her most recent time.
Owen is one of two nationwide $40,000 scholarship winners for January 2025.
