Seniors at Perry High School were given awards and scholarships during an annual ceremony Wednesday night.
Close to 100 seniors were recognized during the senior awards night ceremony. It was held at the Perry Performing Arts Center. The gathering was one of the last times seniors would all be in the same room.
“I’m just glad that we’re able to do this and keep going with what is sort of normal, even though it’s not totally normal,” Nate Lutterman said.
The class of 2024 did not have a normal senior year. It was just four months ago that a 17-year-old student at Perry High School opened fire in the cafeteria, killing sixth-grade student Ahmir Jolliff and wounding seven others before taking his own life. High school principal Dan Marburger died 10 days after being seriously hurt in the Jan. 4 shooting.
“There’s just more effort to get together and bond — just be around one another and make sure that everyone’s doing alright,” Drake Laven said.
Justine Jukama is a foreign exchange student from Latvia spending her senior year at Perry. Jukama received her honorary diploma from Perry Wednesday night. She leaves to go back home Tuesday, so she will miss the school’s graduation ceremony.
“This is like my graduation so I’m really glad to see all my friends get their awards and stuff and celebrate our last year,” Jukama said.
Seniors will have their last day of school on May 22. High school graduation will be held May 26.
