ORLANDO, Fla. – Dozens of students at Jones High School are receiving scholarships as part of a program to empower underserved communities.
During a ceremony Tuesday, 30 students received scholarships from Harris Rosen, philanthropist and founder of Rosen Hotels and Resorts.
The presentation followed a distribution of 27 scholarships to Dr. Phillips High School Students last month.
Rosen started the scholarship program 30 years ago in the Tangelo Park neighborhood. In 2016, the program was expanded to include the Parramore neighborhood.

“The number of high school graduates have increased dramatically to almost 100% and college admissions have increased enormously and changed their lives,” Rosen said.
Hope Hollard is preparing to become a first-generation college student in her family. The scholarship she received Tuesday covers tuition, room and board, and books.
“This scholarship basically means to me an opportunity to get a better life,” Holland said. “It really shows that he really cares about our community and wants us to achieve better.”
Carianna Nelson is the valedictorian at Jones High School and received a full four-year scholarship to Rollins College. She said she appreciates the opportunity the scholarship will give her and joins her classmates ready to carve out her own path in the world.
“It’s been a very long journey,” Nelson said. “I’m just very grateful to be here today and being able to receive this so I can pursue my dreams to go to college.”
