The Section VII high school boys’ ice hockey community brought back a special fundraiser remembering a special person to the North Country.
The 2nd annual Aimee McClane Memorial Scholarship game between Plattsburgh High School and Saranac High School was played in honor of the game’s namesake: Aimee McClane. McClane, who passed away in January 2024 at 50 years old, was a special education teacher at Plattsburgh City School District.
The McClane Memorial Scholarship awards $1,000 to one student at either Plattsburgh, Saranac or Peru High School who exemplifies kindness, hard work and empathy and has made a positive impact on others in their school through these values. Donations were collected via raffle baskets upon entry into the matchup on the ice.
Shawn McClane, Aimee’s son who attends Peru High School, started for the second straight year as goalie for Saranac High School. He performed admirably, but two second-period goals for Plattsburgh lifted the Hornets to a 2-1 victory over the Spartans.
Braedan Calkins scored twice in the second period to give Plattsburgh a 2-0 lead. A shutout by Plattsburgh goalie Owen Chapple was broken in the third period when Landon Giroux scored a goal with 1:32 remaining in the contest. However, the Spartans were unable to tie it from there, even after adding an extra attacker.
