MIDDLEBURY — The Pomperaug High School Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) recently announced the recipients of its 2025 PTO Scholarships. This year, four outstanding seniors were each awarded a $500 scholarship in recognition of their unique passions and how their time at PHS helped shape their goals and growth.
The recipients are Addison Batoon, Jacob Finkelstein, Josie Drago and Marina Gray.
As part of the application, students were asked to reflect on the prompt: “Please share with us something you are passionate about and how your experience during your time at PHS has influenced that.” The selected recipients represent a wide range of interests and stories that highlight the spirit of the PHS community.
Addison Batoon turned a challenge into an opportunity when she didn’t receive the role she hoped for in the school musical. Instead, she was named co-choreographer — an experience that deepened her love of dance. Addison earned a Halo Award for Best Choreography and led three summer musical theater dance workshops for area students.
Jacob Finkelstein discovered a passion for film and media through PHS’s video production and photography classes. With strong support from his teachers, he gained the confidence to pursue this interest further and will be attending a film and media program in college with a focus on editing.
Josie Drago shared how her love of the French language was nurtured at PHS through coursework and her role as president of the French Honor Society. A senior-year trip to France with her grandmother gave her the opportunity to use her skills in a real-world setting, strengthening both her language ability and family connection. Josie plans to study French in college and study abroad in France.
Marina Gray has long known she wanted to help others as a nurse. At PHS, she took multiple science courses including Anatomy and Physiology, and she also shadowed nurses at Danbury Hospital through the Career Center. These experiences reinforced her career goals and prepared her for a college nursing program.
“This year’s scholarship recipients reflect the incredible diversity of interests and strengths among our students,” said Amy Raefski, PHS PTO Scholarship Coordinator, in a statement. “From choreography to healthcare, film to world languages, these students represent the heart of Pomperaug — creative, resilient, and ready to make a difference.”
