A new scholarship program is aiming to support students as they pursue careers in public safety.
Launched by the Portage Public Safety Foundation, a 501c3 nonprofit, the "Portage Public Safety Foundation Scholarship" looks to help students with tuition, fees, uniforms and other expenses as they embark on related programs of study, according to officials.
This includes law enforcement, corrections, fire science, or law enforcement and criminal justice offered at Kalamazoo Valley Community College.
"By investing in the education and training of public safety professionals, this scholarship program contributes to a stronger, more effective public safety workforce with better-prepared police officers, firefighters and EMS personnel – all while helping to build a more secure and resilient community," Nicholas Armold, director of public safety with Portage Public Safety, said.
According to officials, the scholarship is open to students pursuing degrees in criminal justice, as well as current officers seeking advanced education, and high school seniors with a passion for public safety.
