KEYSER, W.Va. (WV News) – West Virginia University Potomac State College (PSC) recently awarded scholarships to numerous Keyser High School students as they embark upon continuing their education at PSC.
Dr. Megan Webb, who serves as the director of development at the college, presented students with the following two scholarships.
The Dulin Memorial Scholarship, made possible by George K. Oss and his wife Joann, in memory of George’s beloved grandmother, Cora A. Dulin, was presented to Keyser High School student Malachi Green, in recognition of his achievements, leadership, and dedication.
After George tragically lost his mother at a young age, Cora raised him and his sister, instilling in them the values of education, resilience, and community. George went on to graduate from Potomac State College in 1955 and built a remarkable career in aeronautical engineering, contributing to the development of rocket propulsion systems and serving his country through science and innovation.
KHS student Brett Hudson was the recipient of the Charles I. “Skip” and Nancy J. Homan Scholarship. Skip Homan and his wife Nancy have deep ties to this community and a heartfelt desire to support future generations of West Virginia residents. They created this scholarship to help students take meaningful steps toward careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
The Doug & Bonita Haines Scholarship was presented by the Haines’ nephew, Brenton Ebert and PSC Student Financial Services manager Jeanette Farris. Recipients of this scholarship include MacKenzie McDonald and Ann Powell.
Doug and Bonita Haines grew up in Keyser, are graduates of KHS, and credit Potomac State College with preparing them for their chosen careers. The Haines Scholarship is committed to supporting local students majoring in business or agriculture.
Sydney Swingle was awarded the Scott A. Bolyard Scholarship, which was presented by alumna Joan Bolyard (Class of 1971). This scholarship was created by Joan and her late husband Larry in memory of their son, Scott. Preference is given to a Keyser High School student majoring in math and attending PSC full time. Recipients may be eligible to receive the scholarship another year providing they continue to meet the selection criteria.
“It is extremely rewarding to see these students succeed,” Bolyard said. “It is also a blessing to hear from students after they graduate.
“This year’s recipient, Syndney Swingle, plans to major in veterinary medicine. She is a very capable young lady who I feel will do amazing things. I encourage others to support local students in furthering their education. This is our family’s honor, and a way of giving back to PSC, WVU, and the Keyser community,” Bolyard said.
PSC admissions counselor Larry Kruk also awarded 32 scholarships to students.
“These scholarships are powerful examples of how the WVU Potomac State College Alumni Association and community members come together to invest in the success of generations to come,” Webb said.
